How To Grow Tulsi Plant At Home


Tulsi plant can be grown in 2 ways, either with seeds or plant cutting




How To Grow Tulsi Plant From Seeds


  • Pluck or select seeds that are brown in colour (these seeds must be dried when the florets are on the plant)
  • Rub the seeds between your palm and remove the outer thin cover what remains are the tiny black seeds



Prepare potting mix


Mix equal quantities of soil, compost (cowdung mannure or vermicompost) and cocopeat 




Types of planter that can be used:


Plastic
Ceramic
Terracotta
Coir (or any natural material)

* Avoid metal at any cost
*Select a planter that has good amount of drainage holes




Sowing seeds


Fill the pot with the potting mix
Scatter seeds over the potting mix 
Throw some cocopeat over the seeds
Sprinkle some water 
Keep it in the shade 
You will see seedlings in 10 days



Growing Plant with cuttings


Select a healthy stem that is still green but has well developed leaves
Give a cut below the node
Plant the cutting in the potting mix
place the planter in a shade area

1. Sunlight

  • Needs: At least 4–6 hours of bright sunlight daily.
  • Location: Preferably east facing location
  • Tip: Place it on a sunny windowsill, balcony, or in your garden where it gets morning sun.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry.
  • Avoid: Overwatering, as Tulsi doesn’t like soggy roots.
  • Tip: Use a pot with drainage holes.

3. Soil

  • Type: Well-draining, loamy soil enriched with compost.
  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.5).

4. Pruning

  • When: Start pinching off the top leaves when the plant is 6–8 inches tall.
  • Why: Encourages bushier growth and prevents flowering (which can slow leaf production).

5. Fertilizer

  • Use: Organic compost every 4–6 weeks.
  • Avoid: Chemical fertilizers — Tulsi prefers natural enrichment.

6. Pests & Diseases

  • Watch for: Aphids, spider mites, whiteflies.
  • Control: Use neem oil spray or mild soap water weekly if pests appear.

7. Climate

  • Best in: Warm temperatures (20–35°C).
  • Protect from: Frost and cold drafts. Move indoors in winter if needed.

The best time to water tulsi plant is either early morning or late evening 
Make sure to give the plant a watering break once a week to avoid root rot

  • Mature green leaves are plucked and rinsed with water to remove dust
  • Add these leaves in hot water along with few carrom seeds (ajwain) 
  • Add few lemon grass 
  • Add 1 inch of ginger crushed.

Let the water simmer for few minutes and then sieve it, let it cool a bit and drink a glass of this water.

Ideally, my personal, opinion would be to grow Tulsi plant from seeds but still if you are in need of a grown plant, here is how you can pick your plant.


1. Visit a nursery that  grows plant using organic fertilizer
2. look out for plant that has atleast small florets growing 
3. Ask the staff if they can repot it for you in a terracotta pot
4. Make sure to use a potting mix that has a combination of garden soil, cocopeat and compost
