Pellionia Repens Care Guide | Watermelon Plant | Procris Repens

Pellionia repens also known as Procris repens or watermelon begonia

Hi and welcome to plant house unlimited, we have lot of viewers who love hanging plants and yes, you guessed it right today we are gonna talk about a hanging plant but the real catch here is that not just the leaves but also the stem has colours in it this plant is just not like any other hanging plant.

How the plant looks like

This is how the plant looks like in a full grown hanging pot.

This can be grown as a trailing plant

The stems are somewhat magenta pink in colour the leaves are oblong and the edges are wavy, there are multiple colours on the leaves varying from dark green to light green colour very, very similar to the skin on the watermelon, this could, be also the reason why it is called as watermelon plant which I guess is easier to remember than pellionia repens or Procris repens

The back of the leaves are plain and greyish like colour

How to care for pellionia repens

It’s easy, as the plant grows well when ignored!

Sunlight

If you are living in an area where the temperature is more than 30 or so then keep it under indirect sunlight , but if you have a cool weather with temperature around 25-30 max degrees then you can keep it outdoor as well.

This plant loves cool weather.

Watering:

water a day or 2 after the soil has dried completely.

Potting mix or soil:

So here there are 2 ways to it

Growing outdoors

If the weather around 25-30 degrees you may want to water It once in 10 days, but, if you are growing it in shade then you may want to water it once in 10 days or more than that.

Ideal If potting mix: outdoor gardening soil, cocopeat, rockphosphate and compost

Growing Indoors

Soil + cocopeat + perlite or coal or rice husk or vermiculite

Propagation: take a cutting of a healthy plant and place it over the moist potting mix or plain cocopeat spray water very lightly and cover it for couple of days and then see how the plant roots.

Tips for successful propagation: never ever, ever place the freshly cut end in the moist soil , always place the centre of the cutting in the potting mix

This way your cuttings won’t rot

Can pet owners grow this plant ?

Yes, why not, this is known to be non toxic plant, and since it is a hanging plant you can easily grow it at a higher level which is out of your pets reach.
